Glossary

The most important terms in SynQaiPro at a glance — in the order in which you encounter them in the manual.

Job

A folder pair (left/right) with settings of its own.

Project

A saved collection of several jobs — you load all the folder pairs of one undertaking at once instead of each individually (chapter 3).

Analysis

The comparison of the two folders; produces the comparison list without changing any files.

Synchronisation

The actual execution of the actions shown in the list.

One-way · Two-way · Mirror

The three directions of synchronisation: left to right only, both ways, or right exactly like left — when mirroring, files that no longer exist on the left are deleted on the target side as well (chapter 4).

Text comparison (diff) and merging (merge)

Placing two versions of the same file side by side with every deviation marked in colour; individual passages can be fetched from one side to the other with a click on an arrow (chapter 5).

Exclusive search

A search window for several terms at once: combined with and/or, individually excludable, restrictable to file extensions. When the hits are applied, the calling view shows only them; the search does not change any ticks (chapter 5.5).

Marking (orange) and ticking

Two different things: the orange marking is a visual pre-selection of several rows, the tick decides on inclusion in the action. Shift+click adds a range to the marking instead of replacing it (chapter 5.6).

Resume

Continuing an interrupted copy of large files instead of starting over.

Demo mode / trial mode

Operation without a licence, with restricted functions.

Checksum (SHA-256)

A fingerprint calculated from the file content; the same checksum means the same content.

Duplicate

A file identical in content (byte for byte) — regardless of its name.

Renaming kit

The name editor: assemble building blocks such as counter, date or text into a pattern by drag & drop, with a preview before executing (chapter 7).

File organiser / category

The organiser groups all files by type categories (images, video, office, archives …) and hands a selection straight to renaming or deletion (chapter 9).

Image similarity / photo series

Images that are not identical but visually similar, or shots belonging together by capture time and camera.

Unassigned images

Shots without a similar counterpart. They form no group of findings and appear only when “Show unassigned” is switched on — where all images start deselected (chapter 10.3).

SpaceMap (treemap)

A depiction of files as areas whose size corresponds to the file size; a right-click on an area opens actions for the file and folder (chapter 9.3).

Image comparison viewer

A window for contrasting two images of a group — side by side, overlaid, via a slider or as a difference (chapter 10.4).

Quality bar

The display beneath the images in the comparison viewer: it breaks the star rating of each image down into its seven measurements (sharpness, resolution, contrast, exposure, colour, noise, detail) and highlights the better of the two for each measurement (chapter 10.4).

Difference view

An image formed from the deviation between two shots: black means identical, bright areas show differences.

ShotScope / EXIF

Photo metadata (camera, exposure, date, GPS …) and the editor for it.

Secure deletion

Overwriting a file several times (1×/3×/7×) before deleting it, so that the content can no longer be reconstructed.

Recycle-bin cache

A program-internal buffer for removed files (not the Windows recycle bin); allows undoing until the view is closed.

Vault (SynQaiCrypt)

An encrypted container/folder that is mounted as a drive with a password.

BitLocker

The encryption built into Windows. SynQaiPro controls it as well — unlike an own vault, a BitLocker drive stays active after the program is closed (chapter 14.6).

Header backup

A copy of the vault header holding the wrapped key. Together with the password it is the only safeguard of an own vault (chapter 14.5).

Recovery key

The emergency key of a BitLocker vault; the only rescue if the password is lost.

File reconstructor

A tool for restoring deleted files from a storage medium (requires administrator rights).

Quick scan / deep search

The reconstructor’s two search methods: the quick scan reads the file system administration data and finds names and paths; the deep search recognises files by their leading bytes (signature carving) — even after formatting, but without names (chapter 11.1).

Hardware ID

The identifier of this PC that a licence is bound to.

Confirmation code

The code the old PC produces when the licence is released — step 1 of the transfer (chapter 17.4).

Reactivation code

The code the portal returns in exchange for the confirmation code and the new hardware ID; it binds the licence to the new PC (chapter 17.4).

License Reactor

A stand-alone program alongside SynQaiPro that performs the same licence transfer — useful when the main program can no longer be operated because of the licence situation (chapter 17.5).
